US Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canadian Goods as Trade Talks Collapse

Washington slaps 50% duties on $20 billion worth of Canadian products after last-ditch negotiations collapsed minutes before a midnight deadline.

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada fell apart on Friday night, triggering 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian products. The collapse came just minutes before a midnight deadline, ending weeks of frantic diplomacy aimed at averting a sharp escalation in the North American trade war.

The tariffs, signed by President Trump on July 20 under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, target Canadian motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, and dairy products. The White House cited Canada’s auto import quotas and the 81% collapse in US alcohol imports as justification for the sweeping levies.

What the Tariffs Cover

The new 50% duties apply regardless of whether goods qualify for exemptions under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, although energy, potash, fish, and critical minerals remain exempt. The tariffs affect roughly 5% of Canada’s total exports to the United States.

Canadian imports of US motor vehicles dropped by 22% over the past year, a decline the administration attributed to discriminatory trade practices. Most Canadian provinces have also halted sales of US alcohol in response to earlier tariff rounds.

Canada Threatens Retaliation

Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government made comprehensive proposals to resolve the dispute but was unable to reach agreement before the deadline. He warned that Ottawa is prepared to consider retaliatory measures.

This trade dispute has raised costs for families, particularly in the US. We have seen a series of trade negotiations conducted by the United States, and there is usually a deadline.

The tariffs add to existing measures already in place, including Section 232 duties on Canadian steel, aluminum, and copper that sit at up to 50% with no USMCA exemption. Canada has previously imposed retaliatory tariffs on US-made vehicles, steel, and aluminum.

The breakdown in talks deepens uncertainty across North American supply chains, particularly in the auto sector where cross-border production networks are deeply integrated. Businesses on both sides had been scrambling to adjust sourcing and inventory strategies ahead of the deadline.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is continuing bilateral USMCA talks with Mexico in separate negotiations, pointedly excluding Canada from those discussions. The total volume of goods trade between the two countries reached nearly $900 billion last year.
