Tesla has officially killed its Solar Roof product, scrubbing all public-facing mentions from its website and telling certified installers that the company will only supply traditional solar panels going forward.
The Solar Roof, introduced in October 2016, was designed as a mini-power plant that looked like high-end shingles, terra-cotta tiles, or refined slate slabs. Tesla’s website now redirects the former Solar Roof URL to its generic solar landing page, and all support pages have been similarly rerouted.
A Decade of Broken Promises
Elon Musk unveiled the Solar Roof at a 2016 event that generated enormous excitement. Tesla began taking $1,000 deposits in 2017, but production and installation timelines repeatedly slipped. The product was plagued by problems from the start: installation proved far more complex and expensive than Tesla initially projected, with wait times stretching years for some customers.
Reports of underperformance surfaced, with systems generating less electricity than promised. Physics also worked against the design – the tight integration of solar cells into roofing tiles limited airflow, causing heat buildup that reduced efficiency. Traditional solar panels avoid these issues by maintaining a gap between the panels and the roof surface, allowing air circulation to cool the cells.
Non-solar portions of the roof were reported to warp under sustained sun exposure, and there were reports of roof underlayment melting. The combination of high costs, installation delays, and performance issues meant the Solar Roof never achieved meaningful scale. Tesla’s energy division reported rooftop solar installations in the hundreds per quarter, a fraction of what would be needed to justify the product’s development costs.
What It Means for Solar
Tesla’s decision raises questions about the viability of roof-integrated solar as a mainstream product. If one of the world’s most valuable companies with massive manufacturing resources couldn’t make the economics work, it casts doubt on the concept’s near-term future.
The broader residential solar market continues to grow, driven primarily by conventional panel installations that benefit from mature supply chains and proven efficiency. Competitors like GAF Energy and Merlin Solar continue to pursue the integrated solar roof concept, though the market remains niche.
Tesla is now directing customers to its traditional solar panels, which are simpler to manufacture and install. The company’s energy storage business, centered on the Powerwall and Megapack products, remains a significant part of its clean energy strategy. But the end of the Solar Roof marks the conclusion of one of Tesla’s most visible failed experiments.
