Romanian F-16 fighter jets have shot down three Russian drones that violated the country’s airspace over successive days, Romanian defense officials confirmed, marking a significant escalation in NATO’s direct response to the war in Ukraine.
The intercepts began Friday when Romanian pilots engaged and destroyed the first unmanned aerial vehicle that had crossed into Romanian territory from Ukrainian airspace. Two more drones were downed in the following days as Russia intensified its long-range strike campaign against Ukrainian port infrastructure along the Danube River and the Black Sea coast.
Romania, which shares a 650-kilometer border with Ukraine, has faced repeated incursions by Russian drones and missile debris since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Previous violations prompted diplomatic protests and temporary evacuations of civilian areas, but the decision to scramble fighter jets represents a qualitative shift in the NATO member’s posture.
Bucharest officially notified NATO allies of the engagement under the alliance’s collective defense framework. Romanian defense officials said the drones were intercepted over sparsely populated areas near the border, with no casualties or property damage reported on the ground.
Romania fields a fleet of 17 second-hand F-16 fighters purchased from Portugal, part of a broader modernization effort that also includes an order for 32 new F-35 Joint Strike Fighters from the United States. The Romanian air force has trained extensively with NATO partners on air policing and rapid response protocols since the start of the war.
NATO has maintained an enhanced air policing mission over the eastern flank since 2022, with allied jets patrolling the skies above Romania, Poland, and the Baltic states. However, the direct engagement of hostile drones by a national air force marks a new threshold in how member states are responding to the war’s spillover effects.
The Russian Defense Ministry did not immediately comment on the incidents. Moscow has repeatedly denied targeting NATO territory, though debris and stray munitions have landed in Poland, Romania, and Moldova multiple times over the past three years.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis described the intercepts as a necessary defensive measure. The Romanian government has also announced it will reinforce border surveillance with additional radar systems and quick-reaction alert aircraft.
The development comes as NATO leaders prepare for a summit focused on bolstering air defense across the eastern flank. Romania hosts a NATO missile defense shield at Deveselu and serves as a critical logistics hub for Western military aid flowing into Ukraine.
