A Russian airstrike on the Central District of Kherson killed a woman and wounded five other civilians on Saturday afternoon, regional officials said, as Russia kept the southern frontline city under fire for another day.
Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, said on Telegram that a woman was killed in the strike. “A woman was killed in a Russian airstrike on the Central District of Kherson. The relevant services are currently working to identify the victim. My sincere condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased,” he wrote.
Five other people were injured as a result of the airstrike, according to the regional administration: women aged 27, 48 and 52, and two men aged 43 and 62. They were diagnosed with blast injuries, closed head injuries and barotrauma, and one resident also sustained a laceration to his right leg.
Private homes, apartment buildings, hospital facilities, a store, garages and vehicles were damaged in the attack, officials said. The regional prosecutor’s office said it was investigating the strike as a war crime.
The airstrike was part of a broader wave of Russian attacks on Kherson Oblast on Saturday. As of 5:30 p.m., 10 residents of the region had been affected by Russian aggression, the prosecutor’s office reported, with Russian forces shelling settlements with artillery and aircraft and attacking them with various types of drones. Earlier in the day, seven more civilians were reported injured in Russian attacks across the region.
Kherson, a city of roughly 280,000 before the 2022 invasion, has endured near-constant Russian fire since Ukrainian forces liberated it in November 2022. The Dnipro River frontline runs within sight of the city, leaving residential neighborhoods exposed to artillery, glide bombs and drones, and much of the pre-war population has been displaced. On Saturday, emergency workers also recovered a body from the rubble of an educational institution previously destroyed by Russian forces in the region.
The mounting civilian toll has fueled Ukrainian appeals to allies for more air defense systems and fewer restrictions on striking Russian launch sites. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on Saturday urged partners to accelerate air defense deliveries after an overnight Russian attack on Kyiv, and civilians in Kherson and other southern communities have borne the brunt of daily attacks throughout the summer as Moscow presses its offensive along the southern front.
