ByteDance is consolidating its AI developer tools under its flagship Doubao chatbot and preparing a new workplace app to challenge Tencent WorkBuddy dominance in China fast-growing AI office market.
The company merged the engineering teams behind coding platform Trae and agent-building tool Coze directly into the Doubao organization, according to Bloomberg sources. A new standalone app branded Doubao Work is expected to launch as early as this week, targeting enterprise users in a market where Tencent WorkBuddy drew 21 million monthly PC visits in June.
All-In-One Super-App Strategy
The reorganization advances ByteDance push to build Doubao into an all-in-one AI super-app. The platform already handles video creation and image generation, and now absorbs coding and agent-building capabilities that previously lived in separate products. The move follows a July 30 restructuring that merged enterprise workplace app Lark, known as Feishu in China, into the Doubao organization.
By folding developer tools into one platform, ByteDance aims to share top engineering talent and reduce sales costs while giving Doubao a single distribution channel to compete across both consumer and workplace markets.
Chasing Tencent WorkBuddy Lead
Tencent WorkBuddy has quietly become China most popular AI productivity agent, and its enterprise integration through WeChat and existing corporate tools gives it a significant distribution advantage. ByteDance response – combining Trae, Coze and Lark under the Doubao umbrella – represents the most aggressive consolidation in China AI office software this year.
The competitive pressure comes as multiple Chinese tech giants scramble to capture the enterprise AI agent market. Alibaba has pushed its Tongyi Qianwen models into workplace applications, while Baidu has integrated Ernie Bot into its enterprise suite.
