Trump Declares ‘Economic D-Day’ Against Iran, Threatens Trade Partners

Trump announced what he called the most crushing economic operation ever against any country, warning nations that help Iran face tremendous consequences.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday declared an “ECONOMIC D-DAY” against Iran, announcing what he called the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country and warning that any nation providing a lifeline to Tehran would face tremendous consequences.

“Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies – It all needs to stop NOW,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “You know who you are.” The announcement marked a sharp pivot from the military campaign that has defined the five-month-old US-Iran war toward comprehensive economic isolation of the Islamic Republic.

Vance Calls It a ‘New Phase’

Vice President JD Vance framed the escalation as a strategic shift, telling the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show that economic pressure was the “most effective” tool available to the United States. “They’re going to try to apply economic pressure to us, but what has been true over the last couple of weeks is that they felt a lot more pressure than we have,” Vance said.

Washington simultaneously imposed new sanctions on Hezbollah, targeting a courier network that the Treasury Department said carried millions of dollars in cash to Lebanon on commercial flights. The sanctions targeted 10 individuals linked to the alleged cash-smuggling ring.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that additional sanctions were forthcoming, with a planned news conference scheduled for August 24. A White House official told the Business Times that the sanctions and naval blockade have left Iran “completely broke” and that Trump has many levers he can pull in the coming months.

Oil Markets React

Oil prices rose more than 2% following Trump’s announcement, reflecting market jitters over the prospect of intensified disruption to global energy supplies. The United States has maintained a naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz for months, and Lloyd’s List Intelligence reported that the blockade has kept most operators away from the chokepoint.

Analysts, however, questioned the long-term effectiveness of the strategy. Iran has withstood nearly five decades of punishing American sanctions, and BBC analysis noted that Tehran has developed sophisticated workarounds including front companies, intermediary nations, and informal money transfer networks. The Washington Post reported that Iran is “well acquainted with sanctions” and does not see an “open door” at the end of the current campaign.

The economic escalation comes as the USS Abraham Lincoln begins its journey home after a nine-month deployment supporting operations in the region. The USS George Washington has arrived in the Middle East to relieve the carrier, ensuring continued US naval presence. Trump had briefly floated the possibility of a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz earlier in August, but negotiations appear to have stalled.
