The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier is departing the Middle East after a nine-month deployment that spanned the US military campaign against Iran, with the USS George Washington arriving to replace the troubled carrier in the region.

A US official confirmed to CBS News that the Abraham Lincoln and its sailors and Marines are heading home after the extended deployment. The carrier strike group had been operating in the Middle East since January 2026, when it was deployed from the Western Pacific as tensions with Iran escalated ahead of the war’s outbreak in late February.

Rotation Amid Ongoing Conflict

The USS George Washington arrived in the Middle East to relieve the Lincoln, maintaining the US Navy’s continuous carrier presence in the region during the conflict. The Lincoln’s departure marks a significant force rotation at a time when the US continues to enforce a naval blockade of Iranian ports and conduct military operations related to the Strait of Hormuz crisis.

The carrier’s deployment was marked by significant operational demands. The Lincoln strike group participated in the initial air campaign against Iranian military targets beginning in late February and continued to support ongoing operations throughout the spring and summer, according to CBS News.

CNN reported that the Lincoln had faced mechanical and operational challenges during its extended deployment, describing the carrier as “troubled” in its live coverage of the rotation. The George Washington, which recently completed a hull swap with the USS Ronald Reagan at its homeport in Yokosuka, Japan, now assumes the forward-deployed carrier role in the Middle East.

“A huge sense of relief” for the aircraft carrier crew returning home, CNN reported, describing the mood aboard the Lincoln as its crew prepared for the voyage back to the United States.

Strategic Posture Shift

The carrier rotation comes as the US military posture in the Middle East continues to evolve during the six-month-old war with Iran. The Pentagon recently reported that 757 US troops have been wounded since the conflict began, while the State Department has imposed unprecedented economic sanctions on Tehran.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans for what he called the “toughest sanctions in history” against Iran, vowing to economically isolate the Iranian government. The US has also redesignated Hezbollah and targeted members of Iranian sanctions-evasion networks, according to Reuters.

The George Washington’s arrival ensures continued US naval dominance in the waters around Iran, where the carrier’s air wing provides critical strike capability and air cover for ongoing operations. The carrier’s deployment signals that the United States intends to maintain its military commitment to the region even as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled.

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains severely disrupted, with flows dropping to roughly a quarter of prewar levels. The carrier presence serves as both a deterrent to Iranian military action and a support platform for the naval blockade that has been in place since the war began.
