Tesla Recalls Nearly 2 Million Vehicles in China Over Safety

Tesla’s biggest-ever China recall covers 1.96 million Model 3 and Model Y vehicles as Beijing intensifies scrutiny of software-based safety fixes.

Tesla is recalling 1,956,713 China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in what marks the electric carmaker’s largest-ever recall in the world’s biggest auto market, according to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation.

The recall, announced on Thursday, covers vehicles manufactured at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory and will be resolved through over-the-air software updates rather than physical repairs. The sheer scale of the action underscores the regulatory pressures Tesla faces in China, where authorities have increasingly used recalls to enforce safety standards on foreign automakers.

Software-Centric Safety Under Scrutiny

The move comes amid growing debate over the adequacy of Tesla’s software-centric approach to vehicle safety. Chinese regulators have repeatedly required over-the-air fixes for issues that in other markets might trigger physical inspections or hardware replacements. While efficient, the practice raises questions about whether remote updates can fully address underlying engineering concerns.

An auto industry analyst who asked not to be named said the recall is “another reminder that Tesla’s software-centric approach to safety is under the microscope. While OTA updates can be quick, they don’t always address the root cause, and authorities are watching closely.”

The recall is the latest in a series of actions Tesla has faced in China. Last week, the company also recalled more than 67,000 imported Model S and Model X vehicles for separate technical issues. The cumulative effect of these actions has drawn attention to Tesla’s quality control processes at a time when competition in China’s electric vehicle market is intensifying.

Competition From Domestic Rivals

The recall arrives at a delicate moment for Tesla in China. Domestic rivals such as BYD and NIO are gaining market share with competitive pricing and advanced features, while Tesla’s brand has faced reputational challenges from previous safety incidents and high-profile crashes involving its Autopilot system.

Despite the challenges, Tesla’s China operations remain a critical growth engine. The company delivered record quarterly sales last week, and China accounted for a significant share of those numbers. Tesla’s Shanghai factory, which opened in 2019, has become one of the company’s most productive plants globally.

However, the frequency of recalls could eventually erode consumer confidence. A person familiar with the matter noted that Tesla’s cooperation with Chinese regulators has been “constructive,” but added that the pattern of repeated actions “suggests issues that could affect investor confidence over time.”

China’s SAMR has been increasingly assertive in enforcing vehicle safety standards across the industry. Earlier this week, the regulator launched what it described as the country’s biggest-ever auto recall campaign, targeting door handle safety issues across multiple manufacturers. Tesla’s action, while separate, adds to the sense that Beijing is tightening oversight of the rapidly growing EV sector.
